How Query Analyzer works in Text Mode option ?
I want to write a application works in same manner as SQL Query Analyzer
works in Text mode option. I studied the behavior of query analyzer and find
out that in text mode option query analyzer does not wait for the query to
get finished, for displaying the result.
It diplays the result in Text form as and when it gets the result. It works
in some different manner than Query Analyzer working in GRID option.
I also want to write a application which does not wait for all the results
of the query, just give me the records which are available right now and
then give the remaining ones also in similar chunks.
Query Analyzer must be using some API calls through which this is possible.
Can any one help me in figure out what APIs are used by query analyzer in
text mode option.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
PushkarTo the best of my knowledge, you cannot use ADO or ADO.NET for this. QA uses
ODBC, and I have a
feeling that it is possible using OLEDB as well. So pick up a programmers ma
nual for one of those
APIs and check for asynchronous execution. But you should carefully consider
the extra work to use
these low level APIs compared to the productivity of a higher level API.

Not all indexes might be useful. Say for instance that one column
you can search for is a gender column. If the search is for "all males",
then that index will not help anyway.
If searching for "all" is not meaningful, you may to want to constrain
users by saying "you must include one of A, B, C, D or E in the search",
where A, B, C, D and E are the column on which you have indexes.

Nah, what I tried to imply that you should investigate whether all these
indexes are meaningful, and particularly whether searching for all rows
is meaningful.
The result of this investigate could very well be that you should index
all ten columns. I don't the table, nor the data distribution, so I
cannot say.

Changing the schema would be a better option. If you create too many indexes
it brings down the performance of the system.
Its not advisible to use too many indexes

Indexes can affect performance negatively - that's true, yet in this
particular case they pretty much seem to be the only option.
Malik,
Consider using indexed views if appropriate, and/or full-text indexing (for
character-based columns) - both as an addition to existing indexes.
Of course another good option is to simply use the profiler and let the
index tuining wizard suggest appropriate indexes based on your workload.
ML|||Hi Malik,
As suggested indexed Views would be better choice. Create a unique clustered
index on the key numeric column. And add non clustered indexes on the other
columns.
Thanks,
Siva

How many users for a database application?
lately i've been faced with a dilemma of whether i should choose to have one
database user to access the database from my app and have inbuilt user
management in the app itself or if i should choose to make a database user
for every user of the application, implementing minimal user management on
the app.
Which is best to choose? what is the best practice?
reagrds,Hi,
I recommend you to have seperate users in SQL server for each application
(provide prev. based on requirement), this will allow you to
have more security.
If you have the option of using Windows Authentication to connect to sql
server then you can set
the user and password policies for each user, this enables the highest
security level.
Note:
I will not recommend you to have application level users because of security
reasons.
Thanks

How many SQL Server Liscences ?
We need to know how many SQL Server Liscences we require.
We have 2 SQL database users (user_app, user_web: one for our application and one for web access)
There will be around 4 windows logon users using the application and about 50 people using via the web.
Do we need 2 liscences, one for user_app, and user_web or more ? i hope not 54 lol!!!
Just wondering what is the cheapest set of liscencing we require for SQL Server 2000 ?
You can purchase license per user or per cpu. I would say you only need 1 CPU License for Standard it is around $5,000 - $6,000 I believe.
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/default.mspx
|||The deal with Web Licences is that you will either have to name the individual users who will access the application and therefore the SQL Server (multiplexing) or buy a processor license. If only your internal employees will access the database and you already covered them with the appropiate licenses, then your your done. If you don′t know the people gaining access to your server, you will have to buy the proc license.

How many networks does clustering need ?
for hearbeat .
Are there any more ?
Does one connect the hearbeat network to like a local hub for the nodes or
to the same public network ( dont know if im stating this right) ? Whats
best practise to set up the private hearbeat ?But networks, I am assuming you mean network cards on the server. It is
recommend two; one for the Live check and one for public traffic on the node.

How many Mobile DB's can sync with one server?
Hi,
I'm in the planning stages of a new application and upper mgmt needs this question answered. I am planning to use SQL Mobile 2005 on the hand held devices and SQL Server 2005 as the server. What kind of hardware/configuration do I need that would allow 500 mobile devices to sync at roughly the same time? Any reccomendations on design issues is also welcome.
The business community is all on the same schedule and past experience shows that that do things in large groups. I need to plan for the worst case. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
SQL Mobile is capable enough to handle 500 devices syncing concurrently. Many customers are using much more than thousand devices in the similar scenario. Please check out our page http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/sqlmobile/default.mspx. we have lot of information there. Please let us know about your specific needs or any question you have, we will be glad to address them.

How many databases/codebases?
Hi,
I have a question about SQL Server 2005.
Suppose we have a hospitals application where the patients records and all other records are the stored. The solution is a hosting one. Here are three options:
- We have one single database for all institutions (Hospitals) then we need to keep an ID for every institution say institution ID. If we need to rollback the transactions for one institution how can we do that while not rolling back for others? Also, every institution may have slightly different business rules i.e. 80% of the rules and data is same for every institution where as 20% business rules and data may be specific to the institution e.g. if institution is located in Canada instead of US. What I meant to say, every instituion has some data this is not in the base database but we need to add this data specifically for this institution to the base database (i.e. 80% common part) What is the best way / recommendataion to resolve these issues? Another example could be taxes, i.e. tax system in Canada, US and EU is very much different. Can we handle it in the same code base?
- The 2nd option is that we have a separate database for every institution. This will give rise to maintenace issues e.g. if a bug is fixed for one customer then the same bugfix has to be fixed for every customer, say 4000 customers. Then it will be very difficult to maintain the code base.
- The third option could be that the base database is same for every institution and in addition to base database there is one additional database for every institution which has the 20% rules/data that vary. But this option may run into problems if the rule/data is implemented in base database already has rules for this type of transactions, there will be a conflict and we need to manage feature list for every customer and first see if you execute in the base database, if not then use the institution specific database. Again this will raise maintenence issues.
What is industry practice or recommendation and why? Is there any material on the web or on the microsoft web site that gives guidance on these / similar issues.
Your cooperation will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paraclete

How is it possible that inserted and deleted are both empty in trigger?
I created manage update trigger to react on one column changes. There is an application which is working with DB, so I don't have access to SQL query which changes this column. In most cases trigger works fine, but in one case when this column changes, trigger is fired and IsUpdatedColumn is true for this column, but both inserted and deleted table are empty, so I can't get new value for this column. Any idea why is it happened? Is any way around?
This column type is uniqueidentifier. Inserted and deleted tables are empty when application is changing value from NULL to not null value, but if I change it myself from Management Studio inserted table contains right values. Most like problem is in query which is changing that value.
I'm doing that on Sql Server 2005.
Triggers are also firing when no rows is affected, it is fired on a per statement basis not per row.HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

The problem is called character conversion and you are getting it because you are using only NVarchar without doing column level collation for Arabic in your database. There are three collations for Arabic in SQL Server 2005. If you are using SQL Server 2000 you can still do column level collation, the links below deals with SQL Server 2005. Hope this helps.

How I can connect...
What have you read so far? Have you done any research into ADO.NET? I
suggest picking up one of the 30 or so books on the subject or take a look
at the documentation that clearly shows how to connect from any application
to SQL Server (including MSDE).

how i can connect to table in SQL?
i working on VB6 + SQL2000
i have table called (tblBuffer)
and want do something in my application everytime table added new record
(its like trigger in SQL)
thats mean if someone add new record to this table, this table call my
application to do some event.
now i made small monitor (working every 15 second) to see if table have new
record to do something, but this idea need network and SQL Resources.
some one have best idea?

======================================In SQL Server 2005 I would recommend the dependency service but in SQL 2000
the only thing I can think of is a trigger that uses sp_OA... commands to
call a COM object you write in VB.
